Apple Makin' Moves

Apple's Big News: Lights, Camera, Mac-tion!

Before I get started, let me just say that I am the proud owner of an Apple Powerbook so I can’t really say too many bad things about the company – but I do have one problem, sort of. After I touch on that I’ll get into my article. As we all know, Apple is notorious for coming out with new products all of the time. This seems like a good thing right? Maybe, but what about the thousands of students here on campus that bought the iPOD only to be disappointed two months later with a cooler, sleeker update? Also, we cannot forget the iPOD Nano that debuted and took our breath away with its ridiculously small design. I personally, sold my iPOD Photo (forgotten already) on ebay and used the earnings to buy a Nano so I too fell victim to their ever-changing product line.

The article I read talks about the new products that we might see in the near future from Apple. I think the iPOD has had subtle changes made to the point of exhaustion and the article pretty much solidifies this. The future of Apple will revolve around some major changes in order to compete with competitors like Sony and Dell.

First, Sony has the PSP which is a phenomenon in itself. This thing plays games with Playstation 2-quality graphics and also plays tiny, specially formatted DVDs. It really blows my mind that people will actually buy a separate DVD so they can watch it on their little PSP. Apparently people buy them though because Apple feels they must create a new iPOD with a larger screen to compete. There are talks of a new iPOD with touchscreen controls. In other words, the whole front of the new iPOD will be a video display and the old click-wheel control will be replaced by the touchscreen much like a Palm Pilot. Sounds good to me.

Apple also made a huge and controversial change when they put an Intel chip in their notebooks (they're now in the iMAC and MacMini). The new MacBook Pro boasts faster speeds and a cooler temperature – no more sweaty thighs. However, Intel chips have long been used in Windows-based systems which may anger some of the die-hard Apple fanatics out there – me not being one of them. If it makes the computer better, who cares?

Finally, there are talks of wide-screen notebooks. This is a great idea because the notebook displays are just ok right now. Widescreen displays on notebooks just look better if you ask me and they also allow for DVDs to be displayed properly.

With all of these products on the horizon, I think Apple will pick up even more interest from people still a little unsure about their products. If you don’t have an iPOD, get one and I bet you’ll be hooked. Apple really knows how to use technology to keep their products fresh and up-to-date. They also have an incredible marketing plan that keeps existing customers interested as well as drawing in new ones.

I think it is great the apple continues to be innovative with their products. But I also agree with Jeff when he talks about how the products come out too soon. I am an Ipod-mini owner, and I treat it like it’s my prized possession. I bought my mini as soon as it came out so there was almost a year that went buy before the Shuffle, the Nano, and Video I pod came out. I think Apple needs to wait a little bit longer before introducing all of these new products. I know that my friends who recently purchased Nano’s were upset when the video I pod’s came out. If they wait a little longer and let the value of the current I pod’s depreciate people will be knocking down the door’s to buy the updated I pods in the future and their sales will grow dramatically.

I agree with you Jeff that Apple does come out with new products way too soon! I only bought my I pod mini a year ago, and I feel like no one even has a mini anymore these days! I feel like every single month, Apple is coming out with a new version of an iPod, a new iPod accessory, or a new computer! I think it is good that they are updating their technology, but I think it really sucks (yes sucks!) for the people who now feel like they have “outdated” products! (People like me!) However, from Apple’s point of view, they know that people want to stay updated with the latest newest gadget, so they know that people who had iPOD mini’s were going to buy Nano’s and that people with Nano’s might even buy iPOD videos! That would mean that 1 person is spending over $500 on Apple products, which is a LOT of money. I am sure that within 6 months another iPOD will be coming out, so we should all sit back, be patient and wait for the announcement to come!

This IPod nonsense is an absolute joke. The United States must have too much idle money sitting around if people are going to drop a few hundred bucks every two months for a new IPod. What is so cool about IPods anyways? Here’s what they do for our campus at the University of Delaware:

1. Make people like me who don’t have 300 dollars to drop on a MP3 player jealous.

2. Piss off everyone because you try to say hi to a friend while walking to class but they can’t hear you because they’re jamming out to Coldplay on their Nano.

3. Piss of the teachers because people are listening to their Fallout Boy and Norah Jones too loud in the classroom and everyone can hear it. Trust me, if this is you, we all dislike you too.

4. These devices are ruining our social abilities. People don’t talk to each other anymore. They just put on their headphones and zone out for a couple of days.

So anyway, I am laughing at all of you now because I’m going to wait until we can listen to music, talk on the phone, watch movies, do e-mail, do our taxes, pay for dinner, and get girls on the IPod before I buy one. It will probably still only cost 300 dollars too.
